Maurizio Cattelan exhibition in Berlin

Overview

The Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin has launched ‘Maurizio Cattelan: Night’, a major solo exhibition scheduled to run until March 2027.

Moving away from the artist’s more whimsical works, museum director Klaus Biesenbach describes the collection as a “very serious show that evokes a sense of humility.” The exhibition features over a dozen works, including new productions and installations such as approximately 4,000 stuffed pigeons under the museum roof.

Key pieces in the exhibition include ‘Purgatory’, a reproduction of the Brandenburg Gate; ‘Him’, a sculpture of a kneeling figure resembling Adolf Hitler; ‘Dust’, a fire extinguisher containing human ashes; a fallen marble eagle; and a suspended horse. Other works explore themes of power, religion, death, humor, and memory. Cattelan, a recipient of the Preis der Nationalgalerie, envisioned the exhibition space as having a “ritualistic, church-like quality” that creates a dialogue with the historic building and Berlin’s complex history.

Co-curator Lisa Botti notes the continued relevance of the 2001 sculpture ‘Him’ to modern society, highlighting its ambiguity regarding whether the figure is seeking forgiveness. The exhibition also includes ‘Novecento’, an exhausted horse suspended from the ceiling intended to symbolize the collapse of 20th-century power and nobility.
