Maya cultural heritage preservation in Yucatán
Overview
Efforts to support and preserve Maya cultural heritage in Yucatán have focused on both economic empowerment and formal recognition.
Initially, the Mexican Secretariat of Culture and Financiera para el Bienestar launched the ApoyArte federal program, providing microcredits to Maya female artisans. This initiative, which allocated 476.68 million pesos to benefit 17,892 indigenous and Afro-Mexican artisans, was designed to facilitate the purchase of materials and strengthen productive activities.
Following these economic measures, the State Council of Embroiderers of Yucatán began working to register ancestral knowledge in Mexico’s Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Through workshops organized by the Secretariat of Culture and Arts of Yucatán, artisans are seeking to establish safeguards for Mayan embroidery and pursue international recognition from UNESCO.
