Mayor Mamdani diplomatic meetings in New York

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Mayor Zohran Mamdani held high-level meetings at Gracie Mansion to discuss economic and social policy.

On September 23, Mamdani met with President Donald Trump to discuss urban issues including housing, immigration, safety, and the cost of living. The discussion specifically addressed an ambitious housing development project proposed for Queens, with both leaders expressing a commitment to cooperation on matters of mutual interest.

On September 24, Mamdani met with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez as part of the ‘Building an Economy for the Majority’ event. The leaders advocated for policies to strengthen the middle class, increase wages, and expand social protection systems. Sánchez highlighted Spain’s economic model as an alternative based on investment and a robust welfare state.

This meeting, which also included European Council President António Costa, focused on the interconnectedness of municipal and national strategies to support working populations. While Sánchez emphasized that Spain is demonstrating that a ‘different economic model is possible,’ Mamdani highlighted his administration’s efforts to raise the minimum wage and implement social policies to reduce inequality.
