Overview
Heavy rainfall in Mazatlán has caused significant disruptions to water services and local infrastructure. On October 27, the Municipal Water and Sewage Board (JUMAPAM) conducted an emergency two-hour shutdown at the Los Horcones water treatment plant to prevent equipment damage caused by a massive accumulation of water hyacinth. This shutdown resulted in potential water pressure drops of up to 60 percent in various city sectors. Authorities have advised citizens to use stored water rationally while the distribution system normalizes.
Simultaneously, mechanical failures hindered efforts to drain stagnant water from under the Centauro Bridge. The Municipal Water and Sanitation Board (JMAS) reported that after 12 hours of continuous suction work following weekend rains, motopumps failed, forcing a temporary pause in extraction. Consequently, traffic in the area remains severely restricted, with only high-clearance vehicles and heavy transport permitted under strict driver responsibility.
On October 28, continued heavy rains caused the Jabalines stream and several storm drains to overflow, particularly in areas such as Las Jacarandas and near López Mateos. While authorities reported no injuries or damage to homes, the flooding led to road closures, stranded vehicles, and a rockfall from Cerro de la Nevería in the Paseo Olas Altas area. A power outage was also reported in the rural community of Los Llanitos. Local Civil Protection has activated preventive patrols in several neighborhoods as more intense rain is forecasted.
