Media literacy initiatives in Moldova

Overview

Media education programs in Moldovan schools have reached a ten-year milestone. These programs focus on teaching students to verify sources, distinguish facts from opinions, and understand how emotions influence information consumption. Instructors utilize practical experiments to demonstrate the risks of online manipulation and the importance of pausing before reacting to digital content.

Building on these educational efforts, the Center for Independent Journalism (CJI), in partnership with UNESCO and DW Akademie, recently announced winners for media literacy competitions. The ‘Little Media Detective’ contest for primary school students encouraged participants to create illustrated stories about verifying social media information. Additionally, the ‘Learning to Filter. Creating Digital Content that Inspires Trust’ competition recognized digital content creators following training programs held in July 2026. The awards ceremony was held in Chișinău on October 23, 2026.
