Media worker assaults during Ghanaian demolitions
Overview
Reports of physical violence against journalists and media workers during state-led demolition exercises in Ghana have emerged.
In mid-September, reporter Philip Abutiate was reportedly assaulted while filming a demolition at Kpeshie. This incident raised concerns regarding the safety of the ‘fourth estate’ and the protection of press freedom during sensitive public operations.
On October 2, similar allegations surfaced during a demolition at La Pleasure Beach in Accra. A joint team from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces’ 48 Engineer Regiment allegedly used force to push away media workers, bloggers, and traders. Specific reports included blogger SikaOfficial being struck with a rod by a soldier and activist Ralph St. Williams alleging he was struck by a military officer while attempting to document the operation.
