Medical cyclotron unit opening in Luxor
Overview
The Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity announced final preparations for the opening of a medical cyclotron unit at Shefa Al-Orman Hospital in Luxor. As the first facility of its kind in Upper Egypt, the unit is intended to produce short-lived radioactive isotopes necessary for high-precision cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Following the inauguration, the facility was confirmed as the third cyclotron unit in Egypt. The unit supports PET-CT scanning technology, which enables more precise tumor detection and faster treatment protocols. By producing isotopes on-site, the hospital aims to reduce the logistical challenges of transporting radioactive materials and minimize the need for patients to travel to Cairo for specialized care. Many of the services provided by the unit will be offered free of charge to ensure accessibility for patients in Luxor and neighboring governorates.
