Medical diploma fraud investigation in Brazil

Overview

The Brazilian Federal Police launched ‘Operation Canudo’ to dismantle a criminal scheme involving the sale of falsified medical diplomas and academic documents. The investigation, which began in 2023 after the Regional Medical Council of Rio Grande do Sul identified a fraudulent diploma, led to the arrest of three individuals and the execution of search and seizure warrants across Minas Gerais and Bahia.

Authorities believe at least 45 individuals may have used fraudulent diplomas to seek medical registration or to facilitate transfers into medical courses, bypassing legitimate educational and professional requirements.
