Medical fraud and drug seizure operations in Surat

Overview

Authorities in Surat, Gujarat, have conducted a series of operations targeting illegal medical practices and the unauthorized sale of controlled substances.

In an initial raid coordinated by the Surat City Special Operations Group (SOG) and the Food and Drugs Department, police seized over 18,000 tablets and three bottles of codeine syrup from two medical stores. Officials noted the seized medicines, including Spasmo Proxyvon and Prehabalin, could be “misused for intoxication, particularly by young people.”

Following these actions, a subsequent operation in the Pandesara industrial area led to the arrest of 16 individuals for allegedly practicing medicine without valid qualifications. Using decoy patients, investigators targeted several clinics where practitioners with educational backgrounds as low as Class 10 were found operating. Some individuals had reportedly been practicing for decades. During these raids, police seized medical equipment and medicines valued at approximately Rs 1.82 lakh, noting that patients were often treated in “unhygienic conditions.”
