Medical misconduct allegations in Gujarat

In Gujarat, the state government has taken disciplinary action against senior medical professionals following allegations of misconduct and harassment against resident doctors.

In late August, Health Minister Praful Pansheriya ordered the transfer of senior doctor Ashwin Ramani from Rajkot Civil Hospital to a primary health centre in Panchmahal. This followed reports that Ramani slapped and verbally abused a female resident doctor during a dispute over patient treatment. The incident led to police detention and protests by resident doctors regarding workplace safety.

In early September, the minister ordered the transfer of Dr. Chirag Barot, an Associate Professor in Vadodara, to Bhavnagar. This action followed written complaints from 18 resident doctors alleging physical and mental harassment, ragging, and inappropriate conduct, including obscene comments and threats regarding academic performance. The minister has reiterated a ‘zero tolerance’ policy toward such behavior to ensure the safety and dignity of medical staff.
