Medical negligence incidents in India
Overview
Reports of medical negligence and illegal healthcare practices have emerged across several Indian states, involving both adult and newborn patients.
In late August, incidents were reported in Maharashtra and Odisha. In Latur, Maharashtra, a woman died following a C-section at an unregistered private hospital that allegedly lacked proper facilities and trained personnel. In Nuapada, Odisha, a woman died after receiving an unprescribed injection at a district hospital, leading to a murder case being registered against the attending doctor.
By early September, investigations expanded to include cases involving newborns. In Bandipora, a committee was formed to examine the death of a newborn and potential delays in medical referral. In Kerala, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights registered a case regarding allegations that a needle was left inside a newborn during treatment at Kottayam Medical College Hospital.
