MedLife, Romania’s largest medical services network, has taken steps to expand its diagnostic and personalized medicine capabilities through new technology and acquisitions. In mid-August 2026, the company launched the country’s first locally processed gut microbiome test. Using shotgun metagenomics and the Illumina NovaSeq X Plus platform, the test analyzes the genetic content of microorganisms at species and strain levels. This local workflow, which includes sample processing, sequencing, and bioinformatics, replaces the previous necessity of sending samples to laboratories abroad. Shortly thereafter, MedLife acquired signed an agreement to acquire a 75% majority stake in Qualipat, a specialist in pathological anatomy, immunohistochemistry, and molecular testing. testing operating out of Timișoara and Oradea. This acquisition is intended to integrate Qualipat’s expertise in oncology and biomarker interpretation with MedLife’s existing genomics and microbiome services. The partnership aims to create a unified diagnostic ecosystem and facilitate developments in digital pathology through artificial intelligence.
