Meghalaya state governance and development
Overview
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has focused on social cohesion and state progress, emphasizing communal harmony and secularism during the centenary celebration of The Meghalaya Hindu Mission. He highlighted the state’s welfare initiatives and development markers, including a decline in maternal mortality and various rural asset creation programs.
Regarding political administration, Sangma addressed the challenges of Cabinet composition following an increase in the BJP’s Assembly strength. He stated that accommodating the BJP in the state Cabinet would be difficult due to limited ministerial berths and noted that no prior agreements for positions had been made.
On the issue of education, the Chief Minister reported that while the CM IMPACT programme significantly improved SSLC examination pass rates, the state faces a shortage of higher educational institutions, which contributes to student dropouts.
In the tourism sector, Minister Paul Lyngdoh has defended the proposed Shillong Peak ropeway project, asserting that the government cannot roll back the initiative because formal agreements and clearances have been secured. Lyngdoh noted the project aims to address long-standing tourist difficulties, such as restricted access through Air Force land. He cited a 2022 agreement with the local dorbar and a 30-year lease signed in 2023 as evidence that the project is legally binding. The minister also stated that no-objection certificates were received from the Airports Authority of India, the Air Force, and the Army. To address environmental concerns, Lyngdoh presented maps indicating the ropeway alignment is located 3.15 km away from the sacred Shillong Peak and does not pass near major water sources.
