Following previous discussions regarding seat allocations and potential alliances, Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) aim to finalize their cooperation strategy for the Melaka state election. PH election director Amirudin Shari noted that discussions are in a “preliminary exploratory stage,” with further sessions scheduled to assess progress. Any resulting agreement will require formal approval from the leadership of both PH and PKR. Reinforcing the negotiation process, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has formally mandated Melaka Chief Minister Ab Rauf Yusoh to negotiate political cooperation for the election. Zahid emphasized that any potential partner must demonstrate “loyalty, sincerity, and honesty” to ensure electoral success. He also instructed that negotiations must protect the interests of the people and ensure BN can defend the 21 state assembly seats won during the 2021 election. He has urged the timely dissolution of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly, noting the current term expires in December. As of late September, PH election director Amirudin Shari indicated that a proposed ‘PH Plus’ arrangement would likely function as an “electoral understanding” rather than a formal new coalition, citing insufficient time to establish a new coalition before the polls. PH is evaluating several scenarios, including contesting solo, forming new alliances, or cooperating with BN. While state PH chairman Adly Zahari mentioned finalizing negotiations with parties sharing similar aspirations, such as Bersatu, talks with federal partner BN have not yet commenced. PH remains prepared to mobilize machinery regardless of BN’s interest in cooperation. Analysts suggest the election will also serve as a test for newer political entities, specifically Parti Wawasan Negara (WAWASAN) and Parti Bersama Malaysia (BERSAMA). While WAWASAN showed strength in the Negeri Sembilan state election, its ability to win independently remains unproven. Conversely, BERSAMA faces scrutiny regarding its political identity following losses in the Johor state election.
