Mental health advocacy in agricultural communities
Overview
Agricultural workers are facing significant mental health challenges driven by economic pressures and normalized stress. Former dairy farmer Randy Roecker has highlighted that high fuel costs and low milk prices have created an economic environment comparable to the farm crisis of the 1980s, leading to severe depression and the loss of family legacies.
In response, advocacy efforts such as the Farmer Angel Network have emerged to support those in crisis. Following personal loss, healthcare professional McKenna Reichling has worked to reduce mental health stigma in farming communities, emphasizing that mental health is as vital as physical health. The Farmer Angel Network, which began in South Central Wisconsin in 2018, has expanded to include chapters in Southwest Wisconsin and collaborates with the DATCP’s Farmer Wellness Program to provide support across the state.
