Meta Community Notes testing in Latin America

Meta has initiated a testing phase for its crowdsourced Community Notes system across 16 Spanish-speaking Latin American countries, including Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia. The tool, which allows users to add context to posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, is modeled after a similar system used by X. During this trial, notes will remain hidden from the general public while Meta evaluates the system’s effectiveness.

This move represents a strategic shift away from Meta’s professional fact-checking model, which has utilized partnerships with accredited newsrooms and International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) certified organizations since 2016.

In response, LatamChequea, a network representing 47 fact-checkers in the region, has urged Meta to ensure that the new system does not replace independent third-party verification. The group argues that professional efforts should complement rather than be substituted by voluntary user contributions, warning that Community Notes may be insufficient in environments with high levels of disinformation.
