Meta international fraud network dismantlement

Overview

Meta has engaged in large-scale operations to dismantle fraudulent networks on its platforms through cooperation with international law enforcement.

In an initial phase involving the Singapore Police Force, Meta disrupted over 3.7 million scam-related accounts, pages, and content. This effort included the removal of 113,000 entities linked to fraud and investment scams between January and June, as well as the removal of 3.6 million “shell pages” in July. Meta executives noted that scammers are increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence to mass-produce fake profiles and malicious code.

Subsequent operations involving the FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice, and agencies from countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Canada, and India resulted in the removal of another 3.7 million fraudulent accounts, pages, and groups. This international crackdown targeted investment, romance, and job scams. The operation led to the arrest of 28 individuals, the identification of over 30 fraud centers, and the rescue of 117 victims in Ghana who were reportedly subjected to violence and forced to participate in the schemes. Authorities also secured approximately $11 million in assets subject to freezing.
