Mexican community protests against development projects

In late July 2026, residents of the ejido of Cerro Gordo in Villa de Zaragoza began protesting the use of explosives by Hoganza SA de CV to quarry rock for the Libramiento Oriente highway bypass. The detonations caused structural damage to homes and heightened community fear, prompting local leaders to demand a halt to the blasting and seek legal recourse.

Two days later, opposition to large‑scale projects appeared in other parts of the State of Mexico. In Atlangatepec, inhabitants continued to denounce the federal PODECIBI circular‑economy development scheme, arguing it threatened health, water resources and the right to a healthy environment despite its promised economic benefits. In nearby Chalco, residents of the El Tetel colony submitted a formal request for urgent road repairs after heavy rains caused flooding and accidents, but officials left the petition pending.

Together, these events illustrate a broader pattern of Mexican communities mobilising against infrastructure and development initiatives they view as harmful to their environment and livelihoods, while also seeking responsive local governance for basic services.
