Mexican currency seizures at borders and airports
Overview
Mexican authorities have conducted multiple seizures of undeclared currency at various entry points.
In early October, the National Customs Agency (ANAM), working with the National Guard and the Secretariat of National Defense, seized approximately $176,640 in undeclared cash at the El Chaparral border crossing in Tijuana. The funds, totaling about 3.2 million Mexican pesos, were discovered in a vehicle entering Mexico from the United States during a routine inspection aided by a canine unit.
Later in the month, a similar operation occurred at Oaxaca International Airport. Following an alert from a canine sensor named ‘Cinta’, officials discovered 365,865 US dollars and 5,900 Mexican pesos hidden in suitcases and a backpack belonging to a passenger arriving from Dallas, Texas. This coordinated effort involving ANAM, the Secretariat of the Navy, the National Guard, and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection resulted in the individual being placed at the disposal of the Attorney General's Office (FGR).
