Mexican legislative altercation between Morena and PRI

Overview

A physical and verbal altercation occurred between Mexican federal deputies Arturo Ávila of the Morena party and Carlos Eduardo Gutiérrez Mancilla of the PRI during a session of the Permanent Commission at the Senate of the Republic.

The confrontation, which took place in the Patio del Federalismo, escalated from a handshake to shoving and grabbing. During the incident, Gutiérrez Mancilla accused Ávila of being a “spokesperson for the narco” and a “nanny for the narco-regime.” Ávila responded by calling Gutiérrez Mancilla a “lackey of Alito,” a reference to PRI national president Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas.

This clash is rooted in broader political disputes regarding the potential removal of Moreno’s legal immunity, or “desafuero.” During a press conference related to this matter, Ávila accused Moreno of corruption, alleging investigations into patrimonial damage of approximately 83 million pesos and properties valued at over 500 million pesos. In response to these allegations, the PRI has denounced death threats against Moreno and accused the government of political persecution.

In a related development concerning investigations into Moreno’s administration, authorities in Campeche arrested Carlos Alberto Medina Hernández, the former director of Social Communication. Medina Hernández is accused of embezzlement involving the alleged diversion of 36 million pesos through shell companies to the broadcaster Mayavisión. The investigation also involves Luis Antonio Espinosa Campos, a contractor reportedly connected to Moreno’s brother.
