Mexican municipal mental health and safety initiatives
Overview
Municipalities across Mexico have introduced various programs focused on emotional health, crisis intervention, and school safety.
In Silao, Guanajuato, the ‘Clínica de las Emociones’ was established to provide professional support for mental health challenges and suicide prevention. Similarly, Toluca launched the ‘Patrulla de Salud Emocional’, a specialized unit of officers trained in psychological first aid to respond to 911 calls regarding emotional crises.
In Morelos, the Ministry of Education is implementing strategies to enhance safety and well-being in both public and private schools. During a meeting of the Commission for the Integral Planning of Education in Morelos (COPIEM), officials presented projects to create cardioprotected spaces to improve response times for cardiovascular emergencies. The state is also introducing the Calmécac and Telpochcalli school security programs, which aim to foster a culture of peace, prevent violence, and support socio-emotional well-being through inter-institutional coordination.
In Tlalnepantla, an interinstitutional strategy was implemented to increase security in schools and provide students with resources regarding mental health, substance abuse, and crime prevention through the Municipal Committee for Mental Health and Addictions.
