Mexican municipal police professionalization efforts
Overview
Municipalities across Mexico are implementing various initiatives to strengthen law enforcement and public safety. In Veracruz and Sonora, local governments have focused on recruitment and foundational training. Los Reyes in Veracruz opened applications for its Proximity Police, offering a five-month residential training program, while the Cajeme Police Academy in Sonora prepared a new cycle of instruction covering physical, legal, and ethical training.
Efforts have expanded to include advanced professionalization and specialized education. In Ixtaczoquitlán, over 120 officers are undergoing training in firearms and tactical maneuvers to obtain the Certificado Único Policial (CUP). Meanwhile, Morelia has engaged in international cooperation, sending officers to Shanghai for seminars on information security, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence risk prevention. Additionally, Morelia introduced the ‘Guardianes de la Movilidad’ program to promote road safety education.
