Mexican public health cataract surgery campaigns

Overview

Public health initiatives in Mexico have focused on expanding access to specialized eye care through surgical campaigns for cataracts and pterygium.

In Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, municipal, state, and federal authorities launched a visual health campaign to provide free medical evaluations for 420 citizens. This inter-governmental effort, involving entities such as the Tamaulipas State Ministry of Health and IMSS-Bienestar, aims to identify candidates for surgery and builds on previous local efforts that have already facilitated over 1,000 cataract procedures.

Broader efforts across other Mexican states have also seen significant activity. In Veracruz Norte, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) conducted extraordinary sessions in September, benefiting 271 patients at hospitals in Veracruz and Xalapa. Similarly, in Guanajuato, the Secretariat of Health completed its second Macro Cataract Surgery Session of 2026 at the León General Hospital, bringing the state’s total for the year to 574 patients operated on through these specialized programs.
