Mexican Senate engagement with UN Agenda 2030

Overview

The Mexican Senate has engaged in discussions regarding the implementation of the United Nations' Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During a commemorative event for the eleventh anniversary of the 2030 Agenda, Senator Amalia García Medina raised concerns about the slow pace of progress, noting that the estimated international achievement rate is approximately 18 percent. She called for enhanced collaboration between the government, academia, and civil society to address issues such as poverty, food security, and climate change.

Following these observations, the Senate’s International Organizations Commission met with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Mexico, Allegra María del Pilar Baiocchi. Senator Marko Cortés Mendoza proposed creating a regular protocol to translate UN reports and recommendations into legislative actions. The discussion also touched upon Mexico’s role in multilateralism and its potential contributions to UN organizational reforms, specifically regarding peace and security.
