Mexican sugar industry crisis in Veracruz

The Mexican sugar industry is experiencing a crisis characterized by mill bankruptcies and closures, driven by competition from Central American imports and fructose. In Veracruz, the potential closure of the Ingenio San Pedro sugar mill in Lerdo de Tejada prompted legislative action. Federal deputy Rubén Moreira Valdez proposed an agreement involving the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to protect workers' rights and find alternatives for sugarcane commercialization.

Following these developments, Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García intervened to secure the continuity of the Ingenio San Pedro. The state government has guaranteed it will purchase cane during the upcoming harvest season, starting between November and December, to stabilize the regional economy and protect approximately 500 direct jobs. Meanwhile, the National Confederation for the Development of Sucrochemistry and Energy Sustainability (CONADESSE) is advocating for a transition toward bioenergy, such as biofuels and eco-friendly plastics, to address industry instability.
