Mexican urban public security perception trends

Overview

Recent data indicates varying improvements in perceived security across several Mexican municipalities. In Querétaro, the city reached its highest level of perceived security since the INEGI Urban Public Security Survey began, ranking ninth nationally. Similarly, the La Laguna region and Torreón have seen a historic reduction in the perception of insecurity compared to the previous year.

In Mérida, the perception of insecurity dropped by 4.2 percentage points in the third quarter of 2026, reaching 34 percent, which remains below the national average of 58.1 percent. In Ecatepec, the perception of insecurity decreased by 11.4 percentage points between late 2024 and September 2026. Local officials attributed these shifts to security strategies, social programs, and the recovery of public spaces, noting that citizen confidence in the local police force rose from 21.3 percent to 44.1 percent.
