Mexico community and sustainable tourism development

Overview

Mexico is prioritizing community and nature-based tourism to distribute economic benefits to local municipalities and small businesses. This initiative follows a March 2026 decree by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, which declared community tourism to be of public interest and established the National Coordination for the Promotion of Community Tourism.

Building on this framework, the Secretariat of Tourism (Sectur) launched a global promotional campaign titled ‘Siempre hay un motivo para volver’ (There is always a reason to return). The campaign focuses on seven experiential pillars, including biodiversity, gastronomy, and community connection. Additionally, regional cooperation has been highlighted through participation in the 10th Sustainable & Social Tourism Summit in Mexico City, where stakeholders discussed inclusive tourism models and the preservation of cultural identity.
