Mexico energy sovereignty and transition strategy

Mexico is pursuing a strategy to enhance energy sovereignty and reduce its reliance on imported natural gas. Currently, 75% of the nation’s gas is imported, primarily from the United States, a situation the government views as a risk to national security since gas is essential for 70% of the country’s electricity generation. The administration aims to lower this dependency to 50.5% by 2030.

To achieve these goals, the government is evaluating unconventional gas deposits through a scientific committee, though officials have not yet authorized hydraulic fracturing. One priority is increasing the share of renewable energy in the electricity matrix from 24% to 38% by 2030.

Building on these objectives, Mexico is advancing 55 new renewable energy projects. These include 17 privately owned projects expected to add nearly 3,000 megawatts to the grid, and 38 projects developed through mixed schemes involving the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). While the state seeks to maintain a leading role in energy management, business leaders have emphasized the need for a stable legal framework and simplified regulations to attract long-term investment.
