Mexico environmental law reform efforts

Legislative efforts regarding environmental law reform are progressing in Mexico. Public hearings recently concluded at the Chamber of Deputies concerning the reform of the General Law of Ecological Equilibrium and Environmental Protection (LGEEPA), an initiative promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum. During these sessions, stakeholders including scientists, activists, and industry representatives proposed updates to the 1988 legislation. Specific suggestions included implementing technologies to treat pollutant emissions at their source and clarifying jurisdictional competencies between government levels to ensure environmental justice and access to information.

Following these discussions, members of the Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM) introduced further legislative initiatives. Deputy Oscar Bautista Villegas proposed reforming the Federal Environmental Responsibility Law to strengthen the reparation of environmental damage. This proposal seeks to ensure that compensation is verifiable and based on scientific evidence regarding biodiversity impact and ecosystem regenerative capacity.
