Mexico journalist murders and impunity

Entities: Artículo 19 · Javier Duarte · Fiscalía General de Justicia de la Ciudad de México · Zuliana Lainez · Article 19

Overview

A July 30, 2026 report reaffirmed that 61 journalists have been killed in Mexico since the start of the “Fourth Transformation,” underscoring a continuing climate of violence and impunity. The same analysis highlighted Peru’s plight, noting four unsolved journalist murders in 2025 and a record 458 attacks on the press that year, with state officials and security forces implicated in more than 70% of the incidents.

The following day, families of the 2015 Narvarte multihomicide – which claimed photojournalist Rubén Espinosa, activist Nadia Vera and three women – staged protests in Mexico City, demanding truth, memory and justice. They pointed out that only three of the material perpetrators have been sentenced, while a fourth alleged accomplice remains at large and the intellectual authors have never been investigated. The demonstrators cited the unimplemented 2017 human‑rights recommendation and warned that Veracruz remains one of the most dangerous states for journalists, with 34 killings and seven disappearances since 2000.

Both events referenced the 2026 murders of journalists Carlos Castro, Roxana Berenice Guzmán Ramírez and Luis Ángel López Valdés, reinforcing the view that state protection mechanisms are ineffective. Families announced plans to seek accountability before international bodies, including the Inter‑American Human Rights System and United Nations mechanisms. The protest coalition, featuring Article 19 and the Veracruz Assembly of Initiatives and Environmental Defence (Lavida), reiterated its intent to file formal complaints with those bodies.
