Mexico missing children crisis
Overview
After mothers in Yucatán confronted a suspected illegal rehabilitation centre in late July, a state investigation was launched. Vatican involvement began in early August when Secretary of State Pietro Parolin addressed a crowd at the Basilica of Guadalupe, praising the perseverance of the mothers, referencing more than 130,000 missing persons, and meeting President Claudia Sheinbaum to discuss peace, migration and social challenges.
Parolin returned in August 2026, presiding over a Mass at the same basilica and again urging solidarity with the families. In meetings at the National Palace he broadened the dialogue to include the ethical use of artificial intelligence and themes from Pope Francis’ encyclical. The Vatican’s “Diálogo Nacional por la Paz” initiative was presented, bringing together clergy, civil‑society groups, police and local authorities to coordinate search efforts and broader peace‑building measures. The sustained Vatican engagement highlights the ongoing national crisis and calls for solidarity with migrants, victims of violence and other vulnerable groups.
