Mexico Tren Maya project development
Overview
The Tren Maya project has seen significant administrative and operational developments. The Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) awarded contracts exceeding 4.1 billion pesos to equip the project’s cargo operations. These agreements, signed in January 2024, involve the procurement of locomotives and various freight wagons, including gondolas, tank cars, and intermodal platforms.
One specific contract, valued at approximately 2.08 billion pesos, was awarded to ETD Solutions and Personas y Paquetes por Aire for 19 locomotives. Reports indicate that Personas y Paquetes por Aire, a company previously focused on aircraft parts and pilot training, updated its corporate purpose to include railway activities only after receiving the award.
In addition to infrastructure procurement, Tren Maya S.A. de C.V. has initiated a recruitment drive for 2026. The project is seeking professionals across 15 engineering and technical specialties, including electrical, mechanical, and railway engineering, to serve in the southeastern states of Yucatán, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Chiapas.
