Mexican municipal cabling removal initiatives
Overview
Municipal governments in Mexico have launched initiatives to remove obsolete and redundant aerial cabling to improve urban safety and aesthetics.
In Coyoacán, Mayor Giovani Gutiérrez Aguilar reported the removal of 100 tons of unused wires, covering 522 roads across 76 neighborhoods. This project, a collaboration with telecommunications companies, has removed over 280 linear kilometers of cabling since May 2022.
Similarly, the Texcoco municipal government has begun a campaign in its city center to remove excess wires. Following negotiations with utility and telecommunications providers, including Teléfonos de México and the Comisión Federal de Electricidad, the administration aims to reduce short circuit risks and visual pollution, with a long-term goal of transitioning to underground cabling.
