Michael Weatherly return to NCIS

Overview

Michael Weatherly is set to return to the CBS series ‘NCIS’ for its 24th season, reprising his role as Tony DiNozzo for a significant story arc. This casting follows the cancellation of the Paramount+ spin-off ‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva’. DiNozzo, who originally left the series in 2016, is currently expanding his private security company, Salus Mondiale, and will be opening a satellite office in Washington, D.C. This business expansion will facilitate his presence throughout the season.

The new season, which premiered on October 6, 2026, with an episode titled ‘Wayward Son’, involves a narrative that draws DiNozzo back into collaboration with the NCIS team following a shooting involving Timothy McGee’s son. New details indicate that this shooting leaves DiNozzo wounded. The season also introduces significant changes to the agency, including the departure of Director Leon Vance. Recent developments reveal that Tony DiNozzo has taken over as the director of NCIS following the death of Leon Vance. Showrunner Steven D. Binder noted that the character has “matured significantly” since his previous departure.

In the episode ‘Sleeping Dogs’, airing October 20, Special Agent Nick Torres must confront the consequences of his past undercover identities. Investigations into a series of murders linked to his former persona, ‘Dante Navarro’, connect Torres to unsolved crimes from the past two years. Additionally, DiNozzo’s return has introduced uncertainty regarding McGee’s future at the agency following hints of a potential promotion arranged by the Secretary of the Navy.
