Michigan football officiating controversy

The Michigan Wolverines’ 13-12 victory over Western Michigan remains a point of contention following a disputed officiating decision. Replay officials added one second to the game clock, which enabled quarterback Bryce Underwood to complete a 47-yard ‘Hail Mary’ touchdown pass to JJ Buchanan in the final second. While the NCAA has indicated it will not entertain appeals from the Mid-American Conference to overturn the result, the incident caused Michigan to drop out of the AP Top 25 rankings.

The controversy has surfaced internal pressures within the Michigan program. Head coach Kyle Whittingham addressed the team’s performance by stating that Underwood’s position is ‘not something that’s infinite,’ signaling a demand for immediate improvement. This assessment prompted former NFL player T.J. Houshmandzadeh to suggest that Underwood should consider leaving the program. Additionally, players held a meeting to address what safety Rod Moore described as playing ‘soft.’

In response to the loss, Western Michigan coach Lance Taylor expressed a desire to move past the incident, noting his team has earned national respect. The Mid-American Conference has formally requested that the NCAA and the College Football Playoff committee recognize Western Michigan as the winner, arguing that replay protocols were not correctly followed. Michigan is now preparing to host No. 11 Oklahoma.
