Microsoft .NET software support end

Overview

Microsoft is scheduled to end support for .NET 8 and .NET 9 on November 10, 2026. Unlike other Microsoft products, the company will not offer paid extended security updates for these versions, instead advising users to migrate to .NET 10, which provides Long-Term Support until November 2028.

Licensing consultancy ProLicense has warned that organizations, particularly in public administration and state data centers, may face security risks. This is due to the possibility that individual components or third-party software may still rely on .NET 9, leaving them vulnerable to unpatched flaws. For those unable to migrate, third-party providers like HeroDevs offer ‘Never-Ending Support’ (NES) to provide security patches without requiring code changes.

In Germany, the deadline presents specific challenges for public administration. Because many specialized applications are managed by state data centers and municipal IT providers, the transition to newer versions depends on external vendors. To comply with BSI IT-Grundschutz standards and the NIS2 Implementation Act, German authorities must document and take responsibility for risks associated with running unsupported software.
