Microsoft OneDrive storage model changes

Overview

Microsoft is implementing significant changes to its OneDrive storage structure for Microsoft 365 subscription plans. Starting October 8, 2026, the company is transitioning from individual 1TB quotas per user to a shared storage pool model.

Under these new terms, Microsoft 365 Family and Premium plans will share a total of 2TB among up to six users, a decrease from the previous potential maximum of 6TB. This represents a 66.7% reduction in total capacity for a six-person household. The Microsoft 365 Pro plan will utilize a shared pool of 5TB. To offset the reduced capacity, Microsoft is introducing the ability for subscribers to share Copilot AI usage credits with family members, a benefit previously restricted to the primary account holder.

While Microsoft describes the change as aiming to provide a ‘more flexible’ experience, critics have noted the move effectively reduces total capacity for many households while shifting the focus toward AI services. Microsoft has clarified that even though storage capacity is shared, files will remain private to each individual account. These changes apply to new subscribers and those switching plans immediately. Existing customers are protected under current terms until their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027.
