Mid-Atlantic armed robbery and jewelry theft wave

Overview

Authorities in the Mid-Atlantic region are investigating a series of violent armed robberies and high-value jewelry thefts across Philadelphia and New Jersey.

In late August, Philadelphia police reported a series of early morning ambushes in Center City involving three masked suspects. During these incidents, victims were targeted for jewelry, electronics, and cash. One victim was struck with a handgun, and investigators noted the unusual presence of an AR-15-style rifle. The suspects fled in a stolen vehicle.

By late September, the scope of the investigations expanded. In New Jersey, authorities reported smash-and-grab robberies at retail locations, including a Bloomingdale’s, as well as thefts in Bayonne, Woodbridge, and Perth Amboy.

In Philadelphia, police identified a specific suspect, 32-year-old Shakur Nichols, in connection with Center City robberies targeting gold chains and high-end watches. Other reported crime patterns include daylight robberies in Frankford and a series of strong-arm robberies targeting women near banks in Northeast Philadelphia.
