Migrant arrivals in Italian ports
Overview
Humanitarian vessels have facilitated the arrival of migrants at various Italian ports. On October 18, the vessel Louise Michel brought 40 migrants, including 11 minors, to Reggio Calabria. The group included individuals from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nigeria, Somalia, and Sudan, receiving medical and identification support from local authorities and volunteers.
On October 31, the humanitarian vessel Life Support, operated by Emergency, docked at the Port of Genoa following a four day journey from the central Mediterranean. The vessel carried 113 migrants rescued during two separate operations on October 27 and 28 in international waters. The group included 36 unaccompanied minors, nine women, and two pregnant women. The rescued individuals departed from Libyan locations, including Gasr Garabulli and Zawiya, and originate from countries such as Bangladesh, Somalia, Eritrea, Egypt, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Sudan, Niger, and Djibouti.
Medical personnel reported that while most individuals are in stable condition, many suffer from seasickness and skin conditions due to poor hygiene. The Municipality of Genoa mobilized civil protection teams, social workers, and intercultural mediators to manage the arrival. Local authorities are providing immediate assistance, including medical support and hot meals, with specific attention directed toward minors under the age of 14. Ocean navigator Giovanni Soldini participated in the mission as a volunteer rescuer.
