Migrant shipwrecks near Greek islands

Overview

In mid-October 2026, two separate maritime accidents occurred near the Greek islands of Lesbos and Samos, resulting in multiple fatalities.

The first incident involved a speedboat carrying Syrian and Palestinian migrants that capsized near Lesbos during a pursuit by the Greek Coast Guard. This accident resulted in six deaths, including an infant. The second incident occurred north of Samos when a speedboat capsized during maneuvers, causing six additional deaths.

Following these events, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates confirmed that five Palestinian bodies were recovered from the waters. Diplomatic efforts involving Palestinian embassies in Athens and Beirut are underway to coordinate with Greek authorities for the identification of the deceased and the repatriation of bodies to Lebanon and Syria.
