Migration challenges at the Chiapas border

There are also reports of individuals offering to facilitate the process for fees of up to 3,000 pesos, leading to calls for increased supervision to prevent corruption involving public officials and private actors.

As institutional controls persist, migrants are increasingly adopting alternative routes through the Sierra de Chiapas to bypass traditional checkpoints. These mountain paths present significant dangers due to geographic isolation and the potential presence of criminal groups. While many migrants from Central America, the Caribbean, and Venezuela utilize these routes, others remain in the border city of Tapachula awaiting responses from immigration authorities. Experts warn that the region faces growing social and economic pressure as humanitarian needs for housing and assistance increase.
