Following the 11 August Republican gubernatorial primary, Mike Lindell suffered an upset to Minnesota State House Speaker Lisa Demuth, who secured approximately 45% of the vote to Lindell’s 31%. Lindell refused to concede, alleging voting irregularities and questioning the credibility of the Associated Press. On 19 August, Lindell announced his intention to personally fund a full hand recount and audit of the paper ballots, an effort estimated to cost $825,000. He cited irregularities such as vote totals moving backward during reporting and unusual synchronized totals across candidates. Lindell stated that even if the audit fails to overturn the results, he views the effort as a “gateway to getting rid of these electronic voting machines.” By 25 August, Lindell’s campaign began withholding the required $825,000 payment, disputing the terms of the recount. The campaign argues that the Secretary of State’s proposed process is unlawful because it intends to record votes for Lindell and Demuth in one column while placing votes for other candidates in a separate column. Lindell is seeking sought an emergency court injunction to waive the payment deadline until the legal parameters are were settled. The Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office maintains maintained that the plan follows state law and has been consistent with procedures used for two decades. Demuth On 30 August, the Minnesota Supreme Court denied Lindell’s request to force a recount under his specific terms. In a ruling signed by Chief Justice Natalie Hudson, the court determined the state’s approved plan is set lawful, noting that Lindell’s arguments “confuse” the purpose of a manual recount with an election contest.
