Minnesota Supreme Court denies Lindell's recount request

Overview

Following the 11 August Republican gubernatorial primary, Mike Lindell suffered an upset to Minnesota State House Speaker Lisa Demuth, who secured approximately 45% of the vote to Lindell’s 31%. By 25 August, Lindell’s campaign began withholding the required $825,000 payment, disputing the terms of the recount. The campaign argues that the Secretary of State’s proposed process is unlawful because it intends to record votes for Lindell and Demuth in one column while placing votes for other candidates in a separate column. Lindell sought an emergency court injunction to waive the payment deadline until the legal parameters were settled. The Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office maintained that the plan follows state law and has been consistent with procedures used for two decades.

On 30 August, the Minnesota Supreme Court denied Lindell’s request to force a recount under his specific terms. In a ruling signed by Chief Justice Natalie Hudson, the court determined the state’s approved plan is lawful, noting that Lindell’s arguments “confuse” the purpose of a manual recount with an election contest. Lindell indicated plans to appeal to the United States Supreme Court.
