Minas Gerais water resource management planning

Overview

The Minas Gerais State Water Resources Council (CERH-MG) approved an updated State Water Resources Plan (PERH-MG) to guide water management for a 20-year period from 2026 to 2045. Developed by the Minas Gerais Institute of Water Management (Igam) and the Secretariat of State for Environment and Sustainable Development (Semad), the plan focuses on ensuring water quantity and quality through integrated management, specifically addressing regional challenges like unequal distribution in semi-arid areas.

Following this strategic update, Igam initiated a selection process to identify a non-profit private entity to act as a Watershed Agency for six hydrographic basin committees. This initiative targets the Semi-Arid and Northeast regions, including the Alto Jequitinhonha Mineiro Affluents, Araçuaí River, Middle and Lower Jequitinhonha, Mucuri River, Mosquito and Pardo River Affluents, and São Mateus River. The selected entity will provide technical, administrative, and financial support to strengthen decentralized water resource management under a contract with Igam.
