Minho region corn husking traditions
Overview
Various communities in the Minho region of Portugal are organizing traditional corn husking celebrations, known as Desfolhada, to preserve agricultural heritage and local folklore.
In early September, events were scheduled in Vila Nova de Cerveira and Perre, Viana do Castelo. These celebrations involve recreating historical community customs such as harvesting corn, using ox carts, and performing folk dances. In Perre, participants engage in the full cycle of harvesting and loading corn, including the search for the ‘milho-rei’, a red corn cob tied to local folklore.
Later in the month, the Rancho Folclórico S. Simão de Mamarrosa announced its 7th annual ‘Tradicional Desfolhada da Mamarrosa’ for October 3. This event includes a morning harvest followed by an evening of music, theater, and the ‘descamisar do milho’ (husking of the corn). The festival will feature guest performances from the Rancho Folclórico S. Pedro do Canedo and the Pauliteiros de Ossela.
