Overview
Recent political tensions in Colombia have been accompanied by the circulation of misidentified audiovisual content on social media.
In mid-September, a video of a large crowd in Pasto was redistributed under the false pretense that it showed a recent mobilization. Investigations revealed the footage actually captured demonstrations from June 21 following presidential election results. The content was shared by former President Gustavo Petro during a period of national debate, suggesting it represented a current mobilization for peace or a potential civic strike.
Shortly after, a video depicting hooded individuals at the Universidad de Antioquia was also misidentified. Some social media posts claimed the footage was a response to President Abelardo de la Espriella’s September 13 speech regarding public forces entering universities. However, the original creator and university officials confirmed the footage was recorded on June 3 during a forum for rectorate candidates, months prior to the current administration's statements.
