Missing person investigations in Turkey

Overview

Recent developments in Turkey involve separate investigations into long-standing missing person cases.

In a 20-year-old cold case from Kırşehir, authorities have made progress regarding the 2006 disappearance of Rıza Güzel. Following investigations and judicial wiretapping by the Gendarmerie Crime Investigation Team (JASAT), seven suspects—including the victim’s spouse and six children—were detained. Investigators located bone fragments believed to be Güzel’s, which are currently undergoing forensic examination.

In a separate matter in Hatay, the family of Ali Nail Gündoğan is petitioning the Ministry of Justice to reopen an investigation into his disappearance. Gündoğan, a welder, went missing in December 2020 after his boat was reportedly swept away by wind during a fishing trip. Despite extensive searches by the Coast Guard and AFAD, no traces of the individual or his equipment were found. His family is now requesting a re-examination of the case, specifically focusing on mobile phone records from the night of the incident.
