Mitchel Bakker signs one-year deal with NEC Nijmegen

Overview

Free agent defender Mitchel Bakker has signed a one-year contract with the Dutch Eredivisie club NEC Nijmegen. The 26-year-old left-back joins the team following a mutual contract termination with the Italian club Atalanta, a period marked by a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Bakker, who has previously played for clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Bayer Leverkusen, and LOSC Lille, joined NEC Nijmegen during a training camp in Spain to evaluate a potential permanent contract. Manager Dick Schreuder had previously noted that the defender made a “positive impression during training” and offered versatility to the defense.

While his market value has reportedly decreased from approximately 14 million euros in 2022 to 1.5 million euros, the move has drawn some media commentary regarding the nature of his transition to the Dutch side. As the Eredivisie resumes following an international break, NEC Nijmegen continues to manage various player fitness concerns, including the expected return of goalkeeper Gonzalo Crettaz.
