Mobile women's health services in Brazil

Mobile health units in Brazil are being utilized to provide specialized medical services for women, focusing on cancer prevention and reducing diagnostic waiting lists.

In Feira de Santana, the ‘Mãos que Ajudam’ project—a collaboration between Instituto Américas Amigas and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—extended its mobile mammography services due to high demand. After nearly 800 women applied for 480 weekly slots, the unit remained in the area for an additional week to address the backlog. The initiative includes follow-up examinations such as ultrasounds and biopsies for abnormal results.

In Santa Catarina, mobile units are expanding services across multiple regions to facilitate early diagnosis. In Nova Santa Rosa, units provide mammographies, Pap smears, and ultrasounds for residents on the SUS waiting list. Additionally, a state-led initiative in the Vale do Itapocu region is scheduled to operate in Guaramirim for approximately 45 days, targeting 1,440 mammographies and 1,080 breast ultrasounds across seven municipalities. The state aims to conduct roughly 40,000 exams through these mobile units to mitigate waiting lists within the health regulation system.
