Mohamed Coulibaly, a 24-year-old accused of orchestrating a multimillion-dollar e-commerce investment scheme, was found dead in a swimming pool at a New Jersey residence on July 31. His death occurred during a welfare check requested by family members.

The alleged scheme targeted professional athletes, including current and former NFL players, by selling stakes in Shopify-powered online stores. Investigative reports indicate that sales figures were allegedly “manually input by somebody with access to the backend” to create a false impression of profitability. At least three former NFL players reportedly lost more than $1 million combined, including former New York Giants linebacker Tae Crowder, who invested $500,000.

Prior to his death, Coulibaly had denied the allegations, characterizing the situation as a “misunderstanding” caused by a failed acquisition. No criminal charges had been filed against him at the time of his death. The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding his passing.
